One of three shoplifters who stole high value items during thefts at three Cumbrian Sainsbury’s stores across two days has been sentenced.
Carlisle magistrates heard today how £600-worth of razors were illegally taken from the Sainsbury’s in Penrith on September 14 last year.
On the same day, razors worth £360 were taken from a Carlisle branch of the supermarket chain.
The following day, February 15, the Sainsbury’s in Kendal was targeted, with scientific calculators and razors — with a total value of £910 — stolen from the store.
One of the thieves, 38-year-old Guram Niparishvili, was brought to court and admitted three charges of theft.
A man of previous good character, he told magistrates during a sentencing hearing that he was sorry for what he had done.
Niparishvili said the shoplifting had not been a planned event, nor were the three suspects been working as a group, he insisted.
Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order. Niparishvili, of Allison Street, Glasgow, must complete 80 hours’ community service, and pay a total of £199 in court costs.
No order for compensation was made amid uncertainty about whether the stolen goods had been recovered or were able for re-sale.
- Two other people are due to appear in court in connection with the three thefts in due course.
