Matty Tyman’s return to Workington Reds has sparked a club statement from his previous club Whitby Town.
The experienced forward is the latest player to leave the Yorkshire club, who felt obliged to respond to supporters’ frustrations.
The club statement said: “A number of players who have left the Towbar Express Stadium were not under contract and had attracted interest from other clubs.
“Under current regulations, those clubs are permitted to submit a seven-day notice of approach, allowing players to consider their options before making a final decision on their future.”
Club officials said that placing all first-team players on contracts is not financially viable.
The statement added: “Whitby Town is continuing to manage significant financial pressures following a challenging season, which included early exits from both the Emirates FA Cup and Isuzu FA Trophy, as well as the impact of postponed fixtures and reduced attendances.
“Committing to full contractual coverage across the squad could have jeopardised the long-term future of the club. Instead, the focus remains on maintaining financial stability while rebuilding a competitive side.”
Fans were also thanked for their continued patience and backing during what the club described as “a difficult period.”
Tymon, who hails from the North East but who has worked at Sellafield for a number of years, stays in West Cumbria four days a week.
He rejoins the Reds following an operation for experienced centre-forward Steven Rigg which has ended his season, while two loanees Daniel Ogwuru and Luke Hunter have been recalled by Morecambe and Fylde respectively.
Tymon, who will be 36 next month, goes straight into the Workington squad for another crucial game this afternoon at Hyde United.
