
Cumbria’s councils have released their arrangements for the Easter bank holidays.
Good Friday, April 3, and Easter Monday, April 7, are bank holidays.
Cumberland Council said some of its offices – including Carlisle’s Civic Centre and Cumbria House, Allerdale House in Workington, and Market Hall in Whitehaven – will be closed on Friday, April 3, and Monday April 6. Online services will be available at www.cumberland.gov.uk
The main customer number – 0300 373 3730 -will close at 5pm on Thursday, April 2, and will reopen on Tuesday April 7 at 9am. There will be a recorded message advising of the closure period and out of hours contact numbers for highways, homelessness, and adults and children’s social care, if anyone calls regarding an emergency.
Household waste and recycling collections
There will be no changes to refuse and recycling collections on the bank holidays. Collections will take place on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6.

Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open as usual.

The permit helpline is closed on bank holidays and weekends.
Cumberland Highways
The Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3736 will be available throughout the Easter bank holiday weekend to respond to emergency highways issues only.
Duty highways staff will be on standby to deal with urgent problems such as serious flooding, dangerous road damage, or traffic signal failures.
Health and social care
Residential and home care services operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Adult Social Care offices will be closed on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6.

Children’s services (for children’s social care)
Children’s services offices will be closed on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6. The emergency duty team can be contacted 24 hours a day for children’s social care emergencies on 0333 240 1727.
Archives, libraries and Local Link offices
Archive centres in Carlisle and Whitehaven will be closed on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6.
Carlisle Library will be offering a limited reception only service from today, Monday March 30 on level 3 of the building, accessed via The Lanes car park.
All libraries will also be closed on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6.

Registration services
The Registration Service will be closed on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6.
Trading Standards
Cumbria Trading Standards’ consumer direct helpline will be closed on Friday April 3 and Monday April 6.
Leisure centres

Westmorland & Furness Council
The main switchboard number 0300 373 3300 will close at 5pm on Thursday, April 2 and reopen on Tuesday April 7 at 9am.
There will be a recorded out of hours message advising of the closure period and contact numbers for highways, homelessness, adults and children’s social care for emergencies.
Household recycling and waste collections
If you live in the Eden or Barrow areas, there will be no changes to bin collection days across the Easter weekend.
Waste collection teams in these areas will be working on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
If you live in the South Lakeland area, collection teams will be working on Good Friday as normal and there will be no change to collections on this day.
However, if your bin is scheduled to be collected on Easter Monday, your collection will be made on Tuesday April 7. All collections through the week will then be one day later than normal.
Recycling
Household Waste Recycling Centres will all be open as usual throughout the Easter bank holiday weekend and standard opening hours will not be affected by the bank holidays. Opening hours are as follows:
- Ambleside: 8am to 6pm, Monday-Sunday
- Barrow: 8am to 11am and noon to 6pm, Monday-Sunday
- Penrith (Flusco): 8am to 6pm, Monday-Sunday
- Grange-over-Sands: 8am to 4pm, Thursday-Saturday
- Kendal: 8am to 4pm, Monday-Sunday
- Kirkby Stephen: 8am to 6pm. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday
- Ulverston: 8am to 6pm, Monday-Sunday
The HWRC permit helpline will be closed on bank holidays and weekends.
Leisure centres
Some Westmorland and Furness Council leisure centres will be open over the Easter break but there may be some changes to normal opening hours. To find out the opening times and activities on offer, visit the leisure centres’ websites.

Young people or people providing support to young people who are at risk of homelessness or are homeless, should visit the Westmorland and Furness Council website for more information.

Westmorland and Furness Council has a duty to assess the need for support and prepare strategies to provide services for victims in safe accommodation and to provide domestic abuse survivors with community in-reach services.

Westmorland and Furness highways
Between 5pm on Thursday April 2 and 8.30am on Tuesday April 7, highways are operating a limited service prioritising reports of emergencies that cause immediate threat to life or property.
If you need to report a highways related emergency during this time, call the Highways Hotline on 0300 373 3306.
To report general problems with potholes, road damage, flooding and drainage, traffic lights, streetlights, pedestrian crossings, trees, vegetation, bollards, manhole covers and more, complete the highways online reporting form.

The Archive Centres and all libraries will be closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, and normal opening hours will apply on Saturday April 4.

Trading Standards offices will be closed over the bank holiday weekend. People should report any live incidents of cold callers or rogue traders to Cumbria police by calling 101 or emailing [email protected]
Council housing repairs
The 24-hour service to report urgent council housing repairs in the Barrow and Penrith areas will continue to be provided by calling 01229 833311.
