Law firm backs Make a Will Month to raise funds for hospice

A Cumbrian law firm is backing Make a Will Month, continuing nearly 20 years of support for the initiative.

Bendles Solicitors is supporting the campaign which raises vital funds for Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.

Make a Will Month, which runs during April, also aims to raise awareness of the importance of having an up-to-date will.

As part of the campaign, people can have a standard will prepared by a solicitor in return for a donation to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, which support families across the county.

The donations cover the preparation of a basic will, with any additional charges for more complex work.

Dorothy Steel, partner at Bendles Solicitors, said: “Having been involved with the Make a Will initiative for nearly 20 years, we are proud to support it once again.

“Making a will is an important step for protecting loved ones and this campaign also helps support the vital work of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, whose work makes a real difference to people across our community.”

Based on Durdar Road in Carlisle, Eden Valley Hospice provides specialist care for adults in north Cumbria who have life-limiting conditions, as well as providing care for their families, friends and carers.

Jigsaw, which is based on the same site, provides respite care, support and activities to babies, children and young people with complex medical and life-limiting condition.

It costs £5.3 million a year to run Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, with around 80% funded by voluntary donations from individuals, businesses and community groups, and the other 20% from NHS grants.

Emma Rogerson, relationship fundraiser at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, said: “Make a Will Month plays a vital role in helping us continue our care for local families.

“One in four of our patients are cared for thanks to gifts in wills and the support of firms like Bendles makes a real difference, both in raising awareness and ensuring our services can be there when they’re needed most.”
