A second cup final in the West Cumberland Sunday League had to be decided by a penalty shoot out.
Two weeks ago Deer Orchard pipped Northside 5-4 on spot kicks in the President’s Cup final and last night, Moresby Rangers lifted the Kenny Hailes Memorial Trophy with a similar 5-4 penalty decider with The Sun.
It had been an enthralling 90 minutes, too, which ended 4-4 and in the penalty shoot out that followed Moresby keeper Sam Thompson became the hero with the one important save.

Sun had scored in the first minute to get them off to a flying start but the game quickly turned as Moresby scored three goals to lead 3-1 by half-time.

In another even better lightning start to the second-half Sun scored twice to get on terms before Moresby regained the lead.

Ellis Trotter should have sealed it with a fifth Moresby goal but was denied by an excellent save and that was the signal for the Sun to draw level again.

Both sides came close to winning it in the last ten minutes with Dan Hill missing the best opportunity for the Sun.

All five penalties for Moresby found the back of the net – Rhys Singleton, James Bell, Ellis Trotter, Brett Smith and Leo Brennan – but it was keeper Thompson who made the save that earned them the trophy.

Moresby’s goals in the game came from Singleton, Trotter, Jamie Martin and Owen O’Neil while Dylan Penn (2), Jamie Patterson and Joe Dobinson scored for The Sun.
In the penalty shoot out Zach Martin, Patterson, Keenan McKay and Ryan Gray all found the target for The Sun but CJ Irving was the unlucky one to have his effort saved by Thompson.
