A pair of Lake District walkers called for help after they became lost in the dark.
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, which was holding a training night at its base, was called out on Thursday, April 2, at around 8.05pm.
Two young men had called 999, saying they were lost in the dark, were three hours from their car and stuck in snow.
The Keswick team said the team had come via the Wasdale mountain rescue volunteers and added: “With poor mobile reception information was limited but the police managed to trace their location to Calf Cove at Great End.”
The team set off up the valley from Seathwaite with a view to covering the two most likely paths down from Great End.
Wasdale and Langdale Ambleside teams also prepared to search their respective paths towards the area as it was not clear where the men had started from or where they would end up.
The Keswick team said: “Fortunately the first people Keswick team encountered turned out to be our missing chaps who had made it down using a small torch they had picked up in a service station on their way here.
“They made it down by themselves but their story is one that has become increasingly common in recent years; a late start, inadequately equipped, little knowledge of their route or what it would entail. In this case however it was a good outcome.
“Most of you are already prepared, but we’re seeing a spike in call-outs for “bucket-list” hikers and younger walkers who follow viral trends rather than mountain safety.
“We share these stories to educate and update, not to invite judgment on the casualties involved.”
Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was also called at around the same time as a man was reported as overdue from his walk on Seathwaite fell by his wife. He turned up before the team went out.
