New Cumbrian leisure centre operator reassures customers fees will not rise

Cumbrian leisure centre customers have been reassured that their fees won’t go up following a change of operator.

Concerns were raised after people reported membership payments appearing to have doubled since the switch.

But Everyone Active – the new operator – has now confirmed that the change is due to handover complications and that prices will transfer over at the same rate.

The firm took over leisure centres in the west at the start of the month after agreeing a 10-year contract with Cumberland Council.

Toni Gaskins, regional contract manager, said: “We can confirm that membership prices have transferred over at the same rate.

“Due to complications arising from the handover process, some customers will pay to cover a longer period than a month in their next direct debit. This will then revert to our standard monthly direct debit collection.

“If anyone has any questions about their membership, please contact your local centre directly and we will be happy to help.”

The new operator is now running Workington Leisure Centre; Maryport Activity Centre; Cockermouth Leisure Centre; Keswick Leisure Centre; Whitehaven Sports Centre and Copeland Pools and Fitness Centre.

It will also run the redeveloped Cleator Moor Activity Centre and the new Millom Leisure Centre.

Leisure sites in Carlisle including The Sands Centre, do not form part of the new contract. The sites will continue being managed on the council’s behalf by Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL), trading as Better.
