Kendal Town fell short in their final game of the season as their bid for a Northern League play-off place reached a disappointing climax.
A magnificent crowd of 943 saw the Mintcakes beaten 2-1 at Parkside Road by a Thornaby side who had also played on Tuesday and Thursday.
Results elsewhere also meant that even with a win Kendal would not have made the play-offs as West Auckland and Boro Rangers booked their spots with last day victories.
Charlie Hindson had given Thornaby a 20th minute lead and after that they were prepared to sit in and be compact, frustrating the best efforts of the home side.
They even offered a threat on the break and it was a swift counter on 72 minutes which brought them a second goal from Luke Drummond.
It was small consolation when Joe Dickson grabbed a late goal in the dying minutes for Kendal.
You can hear below what chairman Michael O’Neill thought of the performance:
Carlisle City drew their final game 0-0 at Crook Town in what was a very good performance considering the way the team was set up.
Tuesday night’s Fred Conway County Cup final with Kirkoswald was uppermost in the mind of manager Dan Kirkup as he looked to minimise the risk of further injuries.
Players who had been feeling strains, knocks and minor injuries were not risked as he already has two definite non-starters. Minutes were shared around, too, as all the substitutes saw action.
City defended very solidly throughout and although just a point it was mission accomplished at full-time with no further injuries reported.
You can hear what manager Dan Kirkup thought of the game below:
Kendal Town finished best of the three Cumbrians in seventh; Penrith had their best finish for years in 12th while Carlisle City were 15th.
