It was a special day for Maryport A at the weekend when they registered their first win since being reformed at the start of last season.
They’ve gone through 11 games last season and three more this year so far before the big breakthrough moment, a 24-20 win over Dalton A at the Athletic Ground.
They were 16-6 ahead at half-time with tries from Alex Humphrey, Jordan Taylor and Bobby Bell with two goals from Lewis Walling.
Second-half tries were scored by Walling and Craig Foster, both converted by Walling.
The big plus for Maryport was that 12 of the 20 on duty were aged either 16 or 17, and they were aided by two senior club figures in Craig Foster and Darren Degraff.
Dalton’s exciting young prospect Ryu McDermott, who was man of the match, scored two tries while Toby Conaghan also crossed twice.
Kyle Brennan scored the fifth try and Elliot Wilkinson kicked two goals.
Also in the Cumbria Men’s League Division One there was a cracking game at Bower Park where Aspatria Hornets beat Egremont A 40-28 in a game which could have gone either way.
Egremont set off like a house on fire going 16-0 up in the first quarter but the Hornets had pulled back 12 points by half time.
After Aspatria had levelled Egremont went ahead again and it was only in the last 10 minutes that Aspatria came through to win it as evergreen Mark Irwin scored his second try and big Tom Gardner crashed over late on.
The other Aspatria tries came from Gary Harrison, Keenan Foster, James Robinson and Guy Reed. Irwin kicked five goals and Ben Tootill landed one.
The Egremont tries came from James Newton, Leon Crellin, Nathan Preston, Tyler Elliott and Quinn Wright with Lloyd Stainton and Johnny Royle sharing goal kicking duties.
The other two Division One games were postponed as Hensingham A and Seaton A were unable to fulfil fixtures against Glasson and Millom A respectively.
You have to feel sorry for Glasson Rangers as that’s the third time so far this season they have suffered in this way.
In the Men’s League Premier Division Wath Brow A continued their good start to the season with a 34-16 win at Cockermouth.
There were Hornets tries from Karl Dixon, Luke Davison, Tom Chambers, Greg Rooney, Brady Todd, Matt Sibbald and Alex Powe.
Sibbald kicked three goals and Daley Stables was man of the match.
Roose Pioneers were leading 28-10 at Flimby when the two sides took their half-time break and it was a bit more even afterwards, finishing 44-22 to the visitors.
The Roose tries were scored by Ethan Bowness (2), Glenn Phillips (2), Max Davies, Jack Wilkinson, Chris Mark and Antoni Kudelski. The goals were kicked by Toby Bowness (4), Lewis Stables and Josh Tranter, Craig Deakin was their man of the match.
In the third game Askam beat Lowca 40-6 with tries from Thomas Hopkins (2), Josh Bayliss (2), Jack Twiname, Dale Lampton and Rob Cockayne. Conner Saunders kicked six conversions.
