Boundary changes to a Barrow conservation area have been approved.
The Central Barrow conservation area centres around Duke Street and Abbey Road, taking in the buildings which were said to characterise the boom town spirit of the mid-19th century.
The protected area was established in 2005 and includes Barrow Town Hall, rows of terraces and a range of unique buildings in the area.
Westmorland and Furness Council’s cabinet debated altering the boundary after a public consultation last year.
Nine main changes were suggested and the council said in its report that they were widely accepted.
New inclusions were:
- Coronation Gardens, as it was a high-quality green space, and adopting it into the conservation area would give it additional protection
- Cavendish Street, due to its buildings of architectural interest including the former Roxy Cinema
- The King’s Arms Pub, contributing to the setting of Schneider Square
- The Alfred Barrow Health Centre and School Building
- Buildings on Michaelson Road
Exclusions were:
- Terraces on Hawke Street as they offered no specific architectural interest
- The Holiday Inn and Sofa Group Building as they offered no specific contribution to the character of the area
- Low-quality buildings on Hindpool Road
- Modern retail units around Abbey Road South
Cllr Vicky Hughes, cabinet member for planning and active wellbeing, told members the conservation area had been agreed in 2005, and the scale of change over the last two decades meant it was no longer fully reflective of the area.
Councillors agreed to the changes.
