Over 11 fire crews tackled a large wildfire at the RAF Spadeadam site.
Carlisle East Fire Station said the fire broke out within the boundary of the site in north Cumbria, yesterday, Tuesday May 12.
It said that an area of grass and gorse around 500 metres by 1,200 metres in size was affected alongside a second seat of fire and teams worked into the night to tackle it.
Crews including Alston, Appleby, Brampton, Ambleside, Carlisle East, Carlisle West, Lazonby, Sedbergh, Silloth and Windermere fire stations attended.
Firefighters from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also supported the response, including Ministry of Defence fire crews.
Hose reel jets, backpacks and beaters were used to contain and extinguish the fire, with crews supported by specialist wildfire resources and a wildfire tactical adviser.
An RAF Spadeadam spokesman said: “A fire broke out within the boundary of RAF Spadeadam.
“The fire crew from RAF Spadeadam attended, and requested back up from the local authority, which arrived quickly.
“There was no risk to personnel on the base.”
The incident was scaled back just after 11pm, with all but one fire engine released from the scene, and monitoring and damping down of hotspots has continued this morning.
