The rain interfered with the Cumbria League programme for the first time – and only one game was completed.

But what a turn up that produced as winless Wigton produced a fine performance to beat one of the three joint leaders in Keswick.

It was a remarkable effort by the Lowmoor Road side who had been set a total well beyond anything reached previously this season.

Keswick, wary of the threat of rain, had declared on 210-8 after 42.5 overs but Wigton were equal to it and reached 213-3 in 48 overs.

Victory was down to a fine opening stand of 160 between Matthew Reed (89) and George Johnston (69), a partnership which gave just one chance.

Three wickets for Wigton’s Josh Dixon (Ben Challis)

Johnston offered a catch in the slips off Paul Hindmarch, bowling his off-spin to hurry through the overs, but on a day of cold hands it went down, and the pair went on to steer Wigton towards their victory target,

Professional Chris Hodgson (31no) then played his part in seeing the job through.

Earlier Glen Weightman had scored his second successive century. His 107 came off 102 deliveries and included 13 fours and five sixes.

James McGown, with a run-a-ball 37no down the order pushed Keswick over the 200 mark when they were confident enough to declare.

Glen Liddle took 4-71 for Wigton, backed by Josh Dixon (3-41).

In the end, though, even with only taking a point it was limited damage as their rivals at the top Cockermouth and Whitehaven both had their games abandoned and had to settle for four points.

Cockermouth had elected to field at Dalton and the home side had reached 95-2 in 25 overs when the game was brought to an early end.

Openers Adam Hunter (36) and Rob Jones (23) had put on 54 for the opening wicket.

Whitehaven, put in to bat at Cleator, had been in early trouble – 77-5 and 107-7 – with sub pro Garnett Tarr our for six after his unbeaten 95 a week earlier.

But they were steadied by Nathan Carmichael, last man out for 53, and Adam Brown (20) and eventually reached 166 – all out on the penultimate ball of the last over. David Blackwell took 3-29 for Cleator who never got the chance to reply.

Champions Furness, looking to bounce back after two successive defeats, probably felt hardest done to by the rain.

They had bowled out Millom for 85 and had made 38-1 off only six overs when it became impossible to play on.

Oscar Mackie (32) and Cody Williamson (26) breathed life into an ailing Millom innings as Samson Storey took 6-36 for Furness.

Workington’s game with Carlisle seconds at the Valentine Ground ended at the halfway stage.

Carlisle, who had elected to bat had made 170-7 in their 50 overs, built around Craig Holliday (51no), Andrew Trickett (30) and Harvey Ion (25).

Matty Lowden took 2-15 and pro Vishva Chathuranga (0-13) both off their ten overs.
