Late line-up change for Workington Comets

Workington Comets had hoped to be at full strength for tonight’s Cab Direct Championship season at home to Scunthorpe Scorpions.

The GT Tyres-sponsored Comets had been ready to welcome back reserve Vinnie Foord to put out their strongest team so far but have been forced into a late change with the absence of Craig Cook.

The locally-based Cook informed the club yesterday that he would be unable to ride against Scunthorpe.

Comets subsequently announced that they were looking for a guest but at the time there was concern they might also be without number one Jonas Jeppesen.

He took a knock in a Danish national speedway semi-final on Wednesday evening.

Jeppesen sat out the clash between his new Premiership side Northampton Foxes and Ipswich Witches on Thursday night but has now confirmed that he will be back in action at Northside tonight.

At that same Danish national meeting in midweek, another new Comets signing — number two Niklas Holm Jakobsen — scored 12 points. He finished in third place, securing his spot in the final.

In a speedway season so far marred by injuries, domestically and on the continent, Scorpions are set to have a full strength side as they head to West Cumbria.

Josh Pickering captains Scunthorpe at number one, with Nathan Ablitt and Michael Palm Toft their other heat leaders, at three and five, respectively.

Connor Mountain rides at two, former Comet Luke Harrison is a familiar face at number four, while the reserves are Ryan Ingram and new recruit Dan Gilkes, who replaced Simon Lambert earlier this month.

Ingram — who guested for Workington earlier in the season — has been in scintillating form of late.

He won British under-21 semi-final on Sunday with a 15-point maximum. In the same meeting, Perry finished sixth with 10 points and also qualified for the British under-21 final. This will be held next Sunday, June 7, at Redcar, where Harrison and Foord will also be in action.

The Scorpions will come to Northside on a high after a 48-42 win last night at Redcar where Pickering top-scored with 14 points.
