A search has begun for a new tenant for a Lake District pub that featured in a Beatrix Potter book.
The National Trust is inviting applications for a new tenant landlord of Tower Bank Arms, in Near Sawrey, as its current tenants prepare to retire.
The pub has a special place in literary history, as it was illustrated in Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Jemima Puddleduck.
It is also located close to Beatrix Potter’s farmhouse Hill Top and is also a short distance from Windermere lake.
After spending two decades at the heart of the village, the current tenants are now stepping back to retire.
David Towler, estate manager for the National Trust in South Lakes, said: “The current tenants have made an outstanding contribution to the Tower Bank Arms and the Near Sawrey community over many years.
“They’ve created a place where everyone feels welcome, from local regulars to first-time visitors. We wish them every happiness for their retirement.
“While this marks the end of a significant chapter, it also opens an exciting opportunity for new tenants to build on their legacy and carry this much-loved pub forward.”
The 17th century Grade II listed building has long operated as a traditional village pub with a strong connection to its local community, alongside a thriving visitor trade.
It features a public bar, dining areas and four letting rooms. It is being offered on a free-of-tie lease.
Set within the Lake District National Park and owned by the National Trust, the property includes a beer garden, outbuildings and parking, and occupies a prominent roadside position in the village.
The pub was last listed on the market in 2022 for a guide price of £225,000.
