Workington Reds have re-signed defender Matty Douglas on a two-year deal.
The 28-year-old, who started his career at Carlisle United, joined Reds in 2016 as a teenager and spent three years with the West Cumbrians.
In his last season he was voted Player of the Year before joining Annan Athletic under Peter Murphy in 2019.
He has played in Scotland since then, first with Annan for whom he played over 100 games and then with Queen of the South when he was signed again by Murphy. An ever present last season at Queens he was club captain.
Workington manager Billy Barr told Cumbria Crack that his assistant Lee Andrews had played a major role in getting Douglas back to the club
Barr said: “I am absolutely delighted that Matty has returned to our club.
“After initial discussions with myself after he left Queens, Lee has had a lot of contact over the last three weeks and we are really excited about Matty pulling on a red short again.
“It is a big signing for our football club, especially after the disappointment of Joradn Little leaving.
“I’m sure Matty is going to play a big part in guiding the younger players we have in our squad along with the other additions we have made so far.”
A commanding defender, proven leader and a player who already understands the standards and expectations of this football club, Douglas brings experience, quality and character in abundance.
The club added: “Securing a player of Matty’s calibre is a significant boost ahead of the new season, but his decision to commit to the club for the next two years makes this an even bigger moment.
“His return is a real statement of intent and a clear sign of the ambition and direction of the football club.
“We are absolutely over the moon to have him back in red.”
