Workington Town’s much improved performance against Oldham on Sunday has come at a good time.
It won’t have gone unnoticed that Town’s next two games are against sides they have already beaten in Salford and Hunslet.
The chance of completing doubles in what has been a largely disappointing season, should be an added spur after the big performance against Oldham.
After trailing 22-0 inside the first quarter Jonty Gorley’s men came back superbly to lead 24-22 – only to be denied by a converted try five minutes from the end.
Early in the season Town thrashed Salford 52-10 at the Fibrus Community Stadium and more recently floored Hunslet 38-6 at the East Leeds Stadium.
The only other win was the west Cumbrian derby at the Ortus Rec when they beat local rivals Whitehaven 22-10.
Gorley decided on a different approach against Oldham and he was delighted at the response he got from his players.
He said: “We made it about ourselves and we nearly beat the second best team in the League.
“Our fans have had a hard time of it so far and they knew that the team had a real dig on Sunday. If we play like that every week we will win more than we lose.
“But Salford on Sunday won’t be easy. They have brought in some good loan players and are a different proposition to what they were when we played them earlier.”
You can listen to Jonty below explaining how he changed things round on Sunday and what they need to do now, particularly this coming Sunday.
