Carlisle was awash with colour, music and celebration as the Cumbria Diversity Carnival 2026 brought hundreds of people together for a vibrant showcase of culture, unity and inclusion, writes Chris Jones.
The festivities began on Warwick Street, near The Old Fire Station, where participants gathered ahead of the lively parade through the city centre.
The atmosphere was electric from the outset, with the powerful rhythms of Drum Nation’s live drummers setting the pace and creating an infectious energy that resonated throughout the march.
People of all ages proudly carried flags representing countries from across the globe, reflecting the rich multicultural diversity that continues to strengthen communities across Cumbria.
The parade served as a powerful symbol of unity, highlighting the many cultures, backgrounds and experiences that make the region unique.
Among those taking part was Cynthia Waggah, chief executive officer of Afrikana CIC, a Carlisle-based social enterprise dedicated to building an inclusive, informed and compassionate community.
Ms Waggah said: “We do a lot of community cohesion activities, workshops, training and events that help create awareness and encourage positive relationships within the local community.
“We also support new immigrants as they settle into the area, helping people see one another as humans first. Currently, we support around 300 people across the region.”
Following the parade, celebrations continued at Bitts Park for The Big Lunch, where residents gathered to share food, conversation and friendship.
Throughout the event, messages promoting unity and standing against hate were proudly displayed, reinforcing the carnival’s commitment to fostering understanding and belonging.
Organisers and partners were praised for delivering an inspiring, free and inclusive event that brought communities together.
Special thanks were extended to Multicultural Cumbria, PINC LGBT+ Youth – Pride in North Cumbria, Cumberland Council and Carlisle One World Centre for their efforts in making the day such a success.
