Aspatria Hornets had a double reason for celebration when they beat Glasson Rangers 52-22 in the Cumbria Men’s League First Division.
It maintained their position as league leaders but it was also a very successful charity day at the club, another instance of a local rugby league club doing its bit for the community.
Hornets chairman Mark Ridley said: “We managed to raise £6,000 which was a fantastic sum and as chairman I am so proud of that.
“Our committee has worked so hard in organising everything.

“This was our first charity day although we have supported various charities.

“This charity day was in aid of the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.
“Mark Elliott from the hospice spoke to everyone during the man of the match awards and explained that it costs £6 million a year to run the hospice.

“They only receive 18% from the NHS and they rest they have to raise.”

You can hear Mark talking to Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh below about the charity day and also about how Aspatria Hornets is developing as a club:
