Windscale returned to action this week with their first pre-season friendly as they build up to the new Wearside League campaign.
They beat Whitehaven Miners 5-2 and play again on Tuesday when they will play Cockermouth at St Benedict’s.
The League fixtures have not been issued yet but the Atoms expect to play their first game in early August.
Windscale lost a number of players last season, for various reasons, but have retained the squad that finished the campaign and have had some additions, particularly from the successful Workington Reds Under-18s.
The reserves will continue in the Cumberland County League and a former senior player Gary Burns has taken on the manager’s job.
He’s looking to provide a conveyor belt of talent for the Wearside League – and run a side that will be competitive themselves in Division One of the County League.
The first team manager Stephen Fawcett has been talking to Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh about his hopes for the new season, the friendlies they have lined up and the new arrivals to the club. You can listen below:
Owen Woodburn (2), Kieran Fraser, Ben Mahaffy and Jayden Fulton scored the Windscale goals in their first friendly win, and they also took the opportunity to blood three 16-year-olds in the second-half.
