[C]umbria’s 2017 junior squad have been honing their skills at Carus Green golf club in Burneside. The 20-strong team, who make up the U16 and U18 county elite, have been undergoing intensive training at the club since April, having been offered full use of both its indoor and outdoor facilities by owner, Graham Curtin.

PGA Professional, Andrew Waple, has been leading the sessions, which have been taking place throughout the spring and summer months, together with the county squad manager, John Smith, who has been supervising the progression of the junior squad for more than 13 years.

Carus’s first-class facilities at the Gary Wolstenholme Academy have been the perfect springboard for the youngsters, aged between 13 and 18, enabling practice to take place whatever the weather. Carus’s simulator rooms have been used to establish an accurate yardage, with the state-of-the-art online training platform utilised to monitor on-going development. With such facilities at their disposal, the juniors’ game has come on leaps and bounds, as Andrew Waple explains:

“Being able to use Carus’s tremendous facilities has without a doubt, impacted the squad’s development this season,” he says. “We have been able to focus on skills testing, perfecting the short game, distance and wedge control, and on-course management; and knowing that training can continue whatever the weather, is such a bonus. We would like to thank Graham for supporting the team’s growth and education this year.”

It’s now the second time Carus has hosted the county junior squad, having also provided the use of its top-of-the-range facilities in 2014. They also offered the men’s county team full use of its practice facilities in 2016, in addition to the expertise of its on-site PGA professionals.
