[H]undreds of future sixth formers enjoyed a taste of college life at Barrow Sixth Form College’s Open Evening on Wednesday 15th November.
Prospective students and their parents toured the facilities at Furness College’s specialist sixth form campus at Rating Lane to meet staff, speak to current students and find out more about their chosen courses.
With courses ranging from accounting to art, biology to business and maths to media, there are more than 25 subjects on offer at the Rating Lane campus with a chance to study A Levels or Cambridge Technicals.
At the event, guests enjoyed a performance by A Level Dance students, a video created by former sixth form student Matthew Dodd and talks from Head of Sixth Form Jeff Chadd.
Jeff said: “It’s an exciting time to be joining Barrow sixth form. Our A Level pass rate is 97.2%, with the college rated recently in the top 25% nationally for A Level progress.
“As well as offering the broadest range of A Level and vocational courses in Cumbria, we also encourage our students to take part in a wide range of enrichment activities such as becoming Student Reps, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Young Enterprise and Sports Leader Awards, as well as opportunities for meaningful work experience and volunteering activities in the local community.
“Our specialist sixth form staff and facilities ensure that our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need as they take their next steps to higher education, higher apprenticeships or a rewarding career.”
Visitors to the college toured the new Centre of Excellence for Art and Design, where students can progress through to an HND, and met the newly elected Students’ Union Executive Officers at Rating Lane.
Callum Slater, Furness College Students’ Union President at Rating Lane, said: “It’s been great to meet new students and lots of them have been really interested in student activities and finding out about the new and exciting Students’ Union.
“There’s a real sense of independence at Barrow sixth form, which I love, and students are free to make what they want of their education. The Students’ Union is testament to that.
“The college is a fantastic place to study.”
