Carlisle Crown Court

[A] MAN accused of trying to kill a Carlisle shop owner and the alleged possession of a machete and blow-torch has appeared at the city’s crown court.

Frank Robertson, 60, faces three charges which arise out of an incident at the PB Sports store, Wigton Road, on the morning of February 13. This prompted a major emergency services response, and the attendance of police, firefighters and the ambulance service.

Robertson stands accused of attempting to murder shop owner Vaughan Livesey, and the alleged possession of two offensive weapons in public without reasonable excuse – a blow-torch and a machete.

Robertson, of Stainton, near Penrith, appeared in front of Judge James Adkin over a video link from custody earlier today (MON).

Wearing a blue, open-necked jumper and glasses, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and nationality.

No pleas were entered by the defendant. Robertson was granted additional time by Judge James Adkin to speak with his legal representatives after defence lawyer, Paul Tweddle, told the court of recent discussion delays due to adverse weather.

The case was adjourned until March 19, and Robertson was remanded in custody in the meantime.

“By that time you will have spoken to your solicitors,” Judge Adkin said to Robertson, “and on that date I will ask you what your pleas are.”
