[T]he Stroke Association and Well has hosted an event for Carlisle residents, offering free blood pressure tests and advice to help beat stroke – the nation’s fourth biggest killer.

Well, on Blackwell Road in Carlisle, held a ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ event in-store on Tuesday 22nd May, offering the community free blood pressure checks, expert advice and consultancy. In its bid to support The Stroke Association, Well has pledged to raise £250,000 for the charity by the end of 2018.

With the success of the national ‘Know Your Blood Pressure’ campaign last month, Well and The Stroke Association, are now encouraging the wider Carlisle community to continue to visit the store for advice on how to lower or avoid high blood pressure – the single biggest controllable risk factor for stroke.

Eimear Tierney, Pharmacist at Well Carlisle, said: “Working closely with Dave Shearer from the Stroke Association, this event was really successful in raising awareness of the link between high blood pressure and stroke. As a community pharmacy, we can support the health of our residents by offering advice and support to reduce blood pressure, and I would encourage the local community to pop into our pharmacy for a free check – you don’t even need an appointment”.

Alexis Wieroniey, Deputy Director for Policy and Influencing at the Stroke Association, said: “Over half of all strokes are caused by high blood pressure and it is estimated that over five million people across the UK are unaware that they have the condition.  High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and it’s much more common than people think. That’s why we’re urging as many Carlisle residents as possible to take a moment and have theirs checked at Well.  A blood pressure check is quick and painless, and it could save your life.”
