[T]wo young lads who rescued a young boy from the River Eden at Wetheral today have been hailed heroes.
At 4pm today a boy, aged approx 8 years-old was swimming in the river with his dad when they got into difficulty.
Seeing the pair in trouble two boys jumped into the river and rescued the boy, his dad managed to make it to safety on his own.
Eyewitness Pauline Little said: “The man was swimming with the boy beforehand and appeared to fall off a ledge and was struggling.
“They deserve a medal, without them there was a definite disaster about to unfold for the father and son.
“My husband went in to, but the two young lads were quicker.”
The identity of the rescuers is unknown, they are described as being approx 12-14 years-old and were on push bikes, one was wearing glasses.
Emergency services were not called, it’s believed the pair may have decided to go to hospital to get checked over as a precaution.
