[T]ONIGHT sees the Comets take on their oldest rivals; the Berwick Bandits, at Derwent Park in a Championship fixture, with the action getting underway at 7:30pm.

The Comets go into this fixture at full strength while the Bandits will be operating Rider Replacement for their Danish rider Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen, who will be racing in his native Denmark in a Danish league fixture.

When these two sides met earlier in the season in a Championship Shield group fixture both the home and away fixtures ended in a 45-45 draw so another keenly-contested clash is expected this time around.

Comets team manager Tony Jackson said: “I’m sure both teams will look back at the two Shield matches and think if it wasn’t for this or if it wasn’t for that we could have won each match instead of ending up with a draw.

“This time around we will both be equally determined to pick up the points at Derwent Park tonight and also when we all meet up again on Saturday evening for the return league fixture over at Berwick, which promises to be another entertaining clash.”

These two fixtures against the Bandits will also be used to determine the winner of the Border Trophy for 2018, which will be won by the side claiming the aggregate victory over the weekend’s two Championship matches. Having been victorious in 2014 and 2015 the Comets then suffered an aggregate defeat to the Bandits in 2016 and 2017, and so will be determined to regain the trophy this year and prevent the Bandits from claiming a hat-trick of victories.

After a relatively quiet period this weekend is a busy one for the Comets riders and supporters with three matches in three days as, after racing the Bandits at Derwent Park on Friday evening and away at Berwick’s Shielfield Park on Saturday evening (7:00pm start), the Comets then travel to Newcastle on Sunday for the first leg of their Knockout Cup clash with the Newcastle Diamonds (6:30pm start).

COMETS UPCOMING FIXTURES:

  • Friday 6th July at 7:30pm: Workington v Berwick (SGB Championship)
  • Saturday 7th July at 7:00pm: Berwick v Workington (SGB Championship)
  • Sunday 8th July at 6:30pm: Newcastle v Workington (Championship KOC, 1st leg)
