Carlisle Crown Court

A COURT has heard how a 13-year-old girl repeatedly punched another female during violence in Workington.

The girl, who can’t be named because of her age, was charged following trouble in the town centre on March 23. She denied common assault but was convicted after a trial.

Details of her attack emerged today (FRI) at Carlisle Crown Court as the girl appealed against the severity of the punishment she received.

The two females were in rival groups which came together at around 10pm. As the victim walked away, she was hit to the back of the head by the 13-year-old. “This is followed by another two punches to the head, said lawyer Holly Nelson. The victim was yanked to the ground by her hair and – as her attacker was pushed away – kicked by others.

The girl received a youth rehabilitation order, 18 hours’ attendance centre hours and was ordered to pay compensation and costs.

It was claimed by her barrister she should have received a more lenient referral order. But having heard all appeal hearing submissions, Recorder Kevin Grice and two magistrates concluded the original punishment was correct. However, costs from the original hearing were cut from £600 to £300.
