Lakes College students speak to staff and guests at the Freshers’ Fair event

Lakes College welcomed students to college life with the opportunity to mingle with local businesses, charities and organisations at their annual Freshers’ Fair.

The event, which spanned for three days this week, featured a number of exciting and informative stalls to equip learners with all the information they need for life as a college student. Students were able to find out more about Journey2Work (a scheme which helps students’ find work during and after college), sexual health support, apprenticeships and a range of student services available in college.

Local organisations joined the fair, showcasing what their businesses can offer to students and how they can get involved. These included Cumbria Constabulary, The Duke Of Lancaster’s Regiment (who explained more about life in the forces), National Youth Advocacy Service (NYAS), Girlguiding Cumbria North and People First (who offer advocacy for children in care). The companies were all well-received by students and helped them to learn what is offered throughout the county.

Lindsey Irving, Children’s Officer for West Cumbria at Cumbria Constabulary, commented, “We’ve had lots of people stop by our stall over the last few days and have been giving info on how young people can stay away of crime. We’ve also had lots of interest in people joining the police which is great, and had fun letting people try on police uniforms in our dressing-up booth!”

Irene Farragher, Learner Support Manager at the college, commented, “Freshers’ Fair is a great way for us to give students the key information they need when starting college. It gives learners the chance to ask questions and take advantage of information and resources to support them on their student journey. The event has been a huge success and we would like to thank everyone who has supported the week’s activities!”
