A group of creative learners at Lakes College painted and crafted a number of festive Christmas decorations used in Santa’s grotto at the Workington Christmas light switch on event.
Level 1, 2 and 3 Art and Design learners were joined by Transitions in Learning students. A workshop was set up in the college’s art studio which allowed the learners to get creative and show off their decorative skills.
Some of the items made in the workshop included giant candy canes, lollipops, snowflakes and Christmas wreaths. The creations were carefully made by hand then decorated with paint, coloured cellophane and other materials.
The decorations were used to transform Santa’s grotto in Workington’s town centre, which was ran by the Rotary Club of Workington. The grotto was incredibly successful attraction, with over 300 children attending and meeting Santa Claus.
Kirsty Gaunt, Art Lecturer at Lakes College, commented, “When the Rotary Club first approached us about designing Santa’s Grotto, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity for all of our learners to work together as a team. We are extremely happy to have helped such an important charity and would like to thank everyone for their hard work!”
Nicola Gibson, a Level 2 Art and Design student at the college, commented, “Making decorations for the grotto was fun, and it really felt like we were elves working in Santa’s workshop! My group cut out holly leaf shapes from cardboard, then sewed them together as a garland. We had a great time and loved taking part in this!”
