A programme designed to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of vulnerable children in Barrow-in-Furness has been branded a major success by organisers.
The four-week camp saw 28 children from across the town invited to take part in a number of confidence-boosting activities.
Run by staff from Barrow AFC, and funded by International Nuclear Services, the programme has been lauded by Craig Rutherford, manager of the Bluebirds’ Community Trust, who helped set up and run the activities.
Craig, who is also a member of David Dunn’s first team coaching set-up at the newly-promoted League Two club, said: “We have seen the children grow in confidence and watched them enjoy everything they have experienced during the course.
“It has been a huge success, especially during these difficult times.
“We are very proud to have been able to deliver this programme – especially with the fantastic support from INS and Victoria Academy – which has allowed us to offer the activities for free.
The children involved were given the chance to sample team-work and problem solving exercises, and were visited by MP Simon Fell, as well as representatives from Barrow Borough Council, an campaigners working to boost confidence.
Sam Wilkinson, Head of Communications and Stakeholder Relations at INS, said: “INS has been based in Barrow for over 40 years so we jumped at the chance to give our support to some of the young people in the local community who need it most at this uncertain time.
“A huge amount of praise must go to Craig, his team at Barrow AFC, and other local partners for the hard work and dedication they have shown in improving the lives of the young people who took part.”
