Online event for young people with SEND goes live

This week (5-9 October) Cumbria County Council and local NHS partners are hosting a new online event aimed at young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) aged 11+ and their families.

For young people with SEND the transition into the adult world can have additional challenges. The virtual fair includes a wealth of information and advice to help young people and their families plan – including over 30 free online webinars throughout the week from key support services covering education and skills, health, wellbeing and social care, independence and specialist support.

The fair is live at https://pfa.cumbria.gov.uk

The Fair will culminate in the online premiere of “One size does not fit all”, a film created by young people with SEND talking about their experiences and what is important to them. The film packs a powerful message and highlights the challenges that face young people today. Anyone wishing to attend the premiere (Friday 9 October, 11am to 12.30pm) must register to attend.

The Preparation for Adulthood Virtual Fair builds on the success last year’s fair in Penrith which was attended by over 250 people. But due to COVID-19 restrictions this year the fair is being hosted online.

Dan Barton, Assistant Director for Education and Skills at Cumbria County Council, said: “I’m really pleased we are able to host a fair this year, despite COVID-19, and that we have so many great sessions happening through the week.

“Supporting young people with SEND make a successful transition into adulthood is a top priority for us and something we know is a big concern for them too. That’s why helping them understand the range of advice, guidance and support available is so important.

“I’d really encourage young people and their families to take a look at what’s on through the week and get along to some of the free webinars – nothing beats being able to talk to people face to face.”
