Cascade of poppies, Kendal Library

A cascade of poppies will be on display in the foyer of Kendal Library to commemorate Remembrance Day 2020, between Monday 2 and Friday 13 November.

The poppies were hand-knitted by staff and volunteers over the last few weeks from the library’s Knit and Natter Group – made up of keen local knitters meeting each Friday to knit and crochet poppies for the display whilst having a coffee and chat.

A social media campaign encouraged donations from other local knitters and knitting groups, aiming to reach a target of 485 – one for each soldier on the Kendal War Memorial. With more than 500 in total, a cascade of poppies to display as been created to mark Remembrance Day this year.

The library’s current opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am to 1pm. However, from Wednesday 4 November, Wednesday opening hours will change to 2pm to 5pm and will be closed on Wednesday mornings.

Following a detailed assessment and taking into account the latest guidance from Government regarding the national lockdown, Cumbria Libraries will continue to provide a selection of essential services during lockdown.

Key services will still be available including select and collect, online services and home delivery services. For digital access to services we are also asking customers to book in advance for access to computers to ensure the best and safest service possible. Book Browsing will not be available during lockdown. Other essential services can also be accessed at your library, such as adult education courses and registrars.

Cllr Deborah Earl, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Communities, said: “This is a fantastic achievement by the local community, and a lovely tribute to those we remember each year. Libraries are such important assets to their communities, and the groups and services available bring people together. This is another example of the warm community spirit in Kendal and I’d like to thank all of the volunteers who took time to contribute to this beautiful cascade.”
