Fire crews are checking for hotspots and signs of collapse after a large blaze ripped through a terraced street in Carlisle yesterday.
The fire service was called at around 3.05pm yesterday to Linton Street.
Engines from Carlisle East and Carlisle West stations initially attended and while there, discovered that the fire was spreading along the roof void of a long terrace of homes.
They requested the assistance of engines from Longtown, Brampton, Wigton and Penrith and the service’s aerial ladder platform.
Sixteen firefighters wearing breathing apparatus attacked the fire from below, while the aerial platform ladder was used to create fire breaks above, preventing the fire spreading to other properties.
Homes were evacuated and no injuries were reported.
A fire service spokesman said: “We will have a presence at the incident today to check for hotspots, and signs of dangerous collapse, as well as fitting smoke alarms and offering fire safety advice to anyone who needs it.
“If you do not have working smoke alarms, contact your nearest fire station, and we can fit them for free.”
