Work on the £25m redevelopment of the Sands Centre in Carlisle is “progressing well” with the council eyeing an autumn 2022 completion date.

An eight-lane swimming pool, a 120 station fitness suite and a four court sports hall with gallery are three of the main features of the redevelopment.

Carlisle City Council says the work is progressing well and that the project should be completed by late autumn next year.

The Sands Centre improvements will include:

  • Main pool hall (25m x 17m, 8 lane) and learner pool with a moveable floor (20m x 8m) and a spectator seating gallery.
  • Four court sports hall with a spectator gallery.
  • 120 station fitness suite.
  • Two dance studios.
  • Spinning studio.
  • Changing facilities.
  • Changing Places facility.
  • Dementia friendly design.
  • NHS Physiotherapy suite.
  • First Aid.
  • Reception desk with offices.
  • Environmental measures to support more efficient use of energy and photovoltaic panels and combined heat and power energy generation.

A Carlisle City Council spokeswoman said: “The exciting Sands Centre development work is progressing well and are expected to be completed by late autumn 2022.

“The ground stabilisation work is now complete and the deep drainage work around the site is also completed including the swimming pool under floor filter drainage.

“Work has now started on the construction of the tanks for the two new swimming pools and the steelwork for the walls and roof for the new pool hall.

“The steelwork, supplied by local suppliers Border Steel, is on site and is being erected for the outer shell of the new leisure suites, new entrance and street area and the NHS area.

“Whilst this major new development takes shape health and fitness activities continue to be delivered by GLL from our new facilities at the former Newman High School.

“GLL also have plans for an exciting programme of gigs, concerts and events in the autumn at The Sands Centre.”
