Long delays were being reported on the M6 near Penrith.
Traffic was queuing on the southbound side of the carriageway on the approach to junction 40.
Vehicles were travelling at speeds of less than 10mph in lane one.
The disruption was caused by the closure of one lane on the slip road for junction 40.
Traffic has now returned to normal but the lane remains closed due to a collapsed manhole cover.
