Strictly Come Dancing stars Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli take on one of the Lake District’s most notorious mountain roads in a programme due to be broadcast on Wednesday.
The pair will pit themselves against the steep and twisting Wrynose and Hardknott passes in the next episode of Craig and Bruno’s Great British Road Trips on ITV at 8pm.
Featuring in the programme will be James Wilkinson, co-owner of the Three Shires Inn, in Little Langdale, which sits at the foot of Wrynose Pass.
James, who runs the inn alongside Tony Guthrie, said the presenters stopped for some advice on how to tackle Hardknott and Wrynose when they were filming for the show earlier this summer.
James said: “It’s a question we often get asked by motorists who are driving over the passes for the first time and I always tell them the same as I told Bruno and Craig; basically, whatever you do try not to stop on the way up, because it’s very hard to get going again.
“I also told them to be very wary of passing places and going too close to the edge of the road because, during the summer, we see at least one person a week who has their tyres ripped to pieces doing just that.”
During the programme the pair will drive from Kendal, cross Windermere by ferry, do some wild swimming in Coniston Water and then head over the passes, before visiting Cockermouth and Honister Slate Mine.
James added: “Things have been extremely busy since we reopened back in the spring, but it’s great to see programmes like this doing their bit to promote the area and local tourism businesses as we all get back on our feet following the pandemic.”
