Cleator Moor Celtic continued their fine run of results to move further up the NW Counties League table.
A 2-1 Division One North home win against Ashton Town carried them up to 13th of 19 when only a few weeks ago they were bottom.
Manager Martin Mahone said: “It’s been really good how we’ve responded and I guess we must be close to topping the form table.
“In our last six games we have only lost once and we have won three in a row.”
However Mahone admitted his side hadn’t been as im[pressive in their latest win as they had been i9n the previous two.
“Sometimes you have to win ugly and this was a bit of a scruffy game when all that mattered was making sure we won it.
“The big thing is we aren’t conceding goals like we used to and that’s only two in the last three games,” he said.
What they do have at the moment is a young forward on fire as both their goals were scored by Jay Wetherill. He now has 15 which puts him fifth in the Division’s leading scorers.
“He’s scoring for fun at the moment and he really does score some cracking goals,” said Mahone.
Wetherill is also a useful rugby league player with Wath Brow Hornets but has been concentrating on his football recently – with positive results.
Ashton had actually taken the lead on 40 minutes withy a goal from Leon Wright after some uncharacteristic slack defending by the home side.
Then two minutes into time added on some clever play by Callum Birdsall at the by-line produced a cross which was thumped home by Wetherill.
Three minutes into the second-half Wetherill produced a smart turn in the box before rifling a low shot into the bottom corner.
Celtic will host Keswick on Tuesday night in the second round of the County Cup and next Saturday travel to Ashton for the reverse League fixture.
