A Cumbrian MP says the Prime Minister enjoys significant support in both Parliament and in Workington as he addresses reports that a number of Conservative colleagues have filed a letter of no confidence in Boris Johnson.
Some national media reports suggest that about a dozen Conservative MPs have written to the chair of the influential 1922 committee of backbench MPs detailing they have lost confidence in the leader of the party.
Conservative Party rules stipulate that if 15 per cent of Tory MPs file such a letter – which is currently 54 – a leadership contest would be triggered.
A party whip told the Telegraph that the number of letters “will not get anywhere near 50” but that it does “cause angst”.
When approached by Cumbria Crack about the reports, Workington MP Mark Jenkinson said: “Speaking with colleagues across the party, I’m not convinced the report has any basis in truth. As in any walk of life, we each have our critics.
“The Prime Minister enjoys significant support from my constituents in Workington, and across the parliamentary party.”
A spokesman for Copeland MP Trudy Harrison said: “If there is such a letter circulating, Trudy hasn’t signed it.”
