Workington’s United Club shocked their higher tiered opponents, Workington Veterans Club A, in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League.
They earned a 3-2 away win to take their Division Two points tally to fourteen, three ahead of their nearest challengers.
Division One’s Vet’s A started the match on the front foot with an excellent victory in frame one from Mark Tatton but it was the second frame that ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in a closely contested match.
As all the reds congregated towards the top cushion and the colours along the side cushion Brian Kendall ground out a superb victory against a dangerous opponent in the form of Vets A’s Paul Mostyn for a 1-1 match score-line.
A swift third frame thanks to breaks of 35 and 40 enabled Vets A captain Kevin Basnett to make it 2-1 but as Clive Lister won the next on the black parity was restored.
The decider started in a disjointed manner, however with United Club captain Andrew Mitchelhill eventually wrestling control and he cantered to victory for a very satisfying match win. Vets A sit fourth in Division One on fourteen points.
Division One’s Workington Conservative Club took advantage of league leaders Station Road B’s free week to close the gap at the top to two points with a 4-1 home victory against Division Two’s Workington Veterans Club B.
Even though the score-line suggested a sweeping win the Cons outfit didn’t have it all their own way.
A Julian Plaza first frame success put the Cons 1-0 up but as the in-form Shane Evitts dispatched quality opposition in Richard McCarthy in frame two the match score was level.
A thumping win for Alan Moore that included a break of 31 put Cons 2-1 up and even though Dave Holland eventually made it 3-1 it needed a black ball victory to improve the Cons lead.
The final frame of the match looked to be going in the direction of the Vets B side but with another black ball win it was Ryan Barker who galvanised the Cons victory to send a deflated Vets B side home.
Vets B stay second in Division Two on eleven points.
In the match between Division Two’s Maryport Social and Workington’s Station Road A the travelling Division One side simply had more in the locker as they cantered to a 4-1 victory.
Frames one and two delivered almost identical score-lines as Station A captain Tom Thompson and team-mate Darren Lawson romped to victory for 2-0.
An equally confident performance moved the score to 3-0 with a victory from Mike Walker and even though the Social outfit offered a little more in the next the same conclusion was offered up as Mark Robertson made it 4-0.
In the last extreme resilience was required if a 5-0 defeat was to be averted and resilience in abundance was delivered as Andrew Scott avoided the whitewash with a victory on the last ball of the match to snatch a point for Maryport outfit.
Finally, Workington Golf Club travelled to Whitehaven’s Rack Shack and with a 4-1 win they moved on to a Division One thirteen points total.
The Golfers have been in good form of late and with two close frame wins from Ryan Ismay and Bryan Walker the confidence was evident as they moved 2-0 up.
Another game decided on the last few balls gave the Rack Shack hope as Andy Moore pulled one back for the Division Two side at 2-1.
This. However, proved to be as good as it would get for the Rack Shack with Mark Brasted and Phil Sorfleet winning fairly convincingly to lead the Golf Club to an industrious match victory.
The Rack Shack remain third in Division Two on six points.
