Help NSPCC’s railway station book scheme expand

The bookshelf scheme at Carlisle Railway Station

Volunteers are needed to help a successful fundraising scheme at Carlisle Railway Station expand.

The NSPCC’s bookshelf scheme has raised more than £3,000 and the charity is looking for new volunteer coordinators to help continue the good work.

The simple bookshelf and honesty box scheme began as a pilot organised by NSPCC community fundraising manager Sandra Jones, before being extended for each of the last two years as its success grew.

Sandra said: “It’s a very simple idea, but one that ensures travellers and commuters have something to read on their journeys, while also raising vital funds to support children and young people across the region.

“It’s been such a success, we’re not just looking for more book donations, but also seeking new volunteers who can spare two or three hours each month to help us ensure the shelves are kept up to date.

“We’re also looking to engage with local organisations and communities to create new book schemes, so if you know anyone who might be interested or be able to help, I’d love to hear from you.”

For more information or to find out how to become a volunteer with the NSPCC in Carlisle, email [email protected] or go to www.nspcc.org.uk
