BAE Systems’ Barrow shipyard is actively encouraging women and girls to think about craft trade apprenticeships.
As part of a Trade-Up event, a group of young women were invited to find out more about trades like welding, steelwork and caulking.
Sixteen people, all from the Barrow and Furness area, took up the opportunity.
Phil Athersmith, head of early careers delivery at BAE Systems Submarines, said: “We have some excellent apprentices working in our craft trades. Modern technology and working practices mean craft trade roles really are open to all, regardless of gender.
“Our business prides itself on providing a modern workplace with diversity and inclusion embedded in everything we do. I’d certainly encourage females to look at the career opportunities on offer in Barrow helping to build submarines for our Royal Navy.”
