The pre-January transfer window rumour mill is in full flow with a possible target for Carlisle United being revealed.

Football League World say they have an exclusive that the Blues, along with Walsall, Scunthorpe United and Rochdale are tracking Halifax Town defender Niall Maher.

Maher, 26, is contracted with the National League side until summer next year and the Shaymen might want to cash in before then.

Manchester-born Maher started his career as a 10-year-old with Bolton Wanderers and went on to play five first team games for the Trotters between 2014 and 2016.

In that time he played ten times on loan at Blackpool before being released by Bolton and signing for Bury.

During the 2016/17 season he played 22 times for the Gigg Lane side, scoring his only Football League goal, before leaving for a short st9int in Ireland with Galway United.

He was back ion England for the 2018/19 season and after a very brief stay with Telford United he joined Halifax Town and from then has clocked over 120 League games and scored five goals.

This season he has made 19 appearances in the National League and scored one goal.

His defensive contribution has helped Halifax to second in the table, with the Yorkshire side boasting the third best defensive record in the division, having conceded just 16 goals.

Halifax are currently level on points with leaders Chesterfield, trailing on goal difference alone.
