Have your say on local development in Copeland

Copeland residents are being invited to have their say on planning in the borough.

The council is developing a new Local Plan, which will guide development and investment in the borough until 2038. Residents are now being asked to comment on a draft of the plan before it is submitted to the Planning Inspectorate in April for a public examination.

Local Plans are used to help decide on planning applications and other planning-related decisions. They are the local guide to what can be built where, shaping infrastructure investments and setting out the vision for development in the borough. The Local Plan sets out which areas of land could be suitable for residential or employment use.

Copeland’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Planning, Coun Andy Pratt, said: “I hope everyone takes advantage of this opportunity and gets involved. These are really important issues for the future shaping of our borough, and we want to make sure everyone has the chance to have their say on that.”

The six-week consultation, launched this week, allows residents and interested parties to comment on the draft ahead of the public examination. Final changes will then be made before the plan is adopted in early 2023.

The draft consultation document and related information can be viewed, and residents can respond, here https://www.copeland.gov.uk/content/local-plan-2021-2038-publication-draft-consultation. Questions can be emailed to [email protected]

The documents will also be available to view by appointment at Copeland Borough Council’s offices in the Market Hall, Whitehaven, and at libraries. The deadline for the consultation is Monday, February 21.
