Carlisle City pulled off a shock, but deserved 2-0 win over Workington in the quarter final of the County Cup.
It could have been more as they missed a penalty and squandered the best chances of the game.
Reds had used only two regular first team starters in Ceiran Casson and Brad Carroll, giving game time to Yrwah Gooden, Charlie Bowman, Reuben Jerome and new signing Scott Fenwick who have had limited football.
At Gillford Park the teams reached half-time goal-less after what was a fairly even contest.
The goal came to life on the restart and Reds skipper Brad Carroll struck the bar with a shot from the edge of the area.
City responded and should have taken the lead. Aaron Bradbury was tripped in the box and got up to take the penalty but slammed it against the bar.
Jordan Holt, one of several former Reds players in the City side, had a great chance to put the hosts ahead but shot wide from a good position.
More City pressure saw Jordan Palmer bring a good save out of Danny Eccles with a clever header, and then Palmer fired over from a good position.
The pressure was building and City deservedly took the lead on 71 minutes when they were awarded a second penalty.
This time top scorer Palmer took it and he made no mistake.
A minute later City doubled their lead. A Holt cross was finished stylishly by Palmer.
Although Reds applied late pressure they never seriously tested Craig Murray and City were through to a deserved victory.
