Work is due to start to prepare for the installation of electric vehicle charging points in car parks across Barrow.

A total of 18 additional charging points will soon be made available in 10 car parks run by Barrow Borough Council and other locations in the area.

The electric charging stations forms part of the Low Carbon Barrow initiative – a series of projects which aim to engage local communities on climate issues and sustainability using funding from the European Regional Development Fund and Cumbria LEP.

The initiative will help contribute to Barrow Borough Council’s commitment to achieving carbon neutral status for the borough by 2037, it said.

Ann Thomson, Barrow Borough Council leader, said: “The council is working incredibly hard to ensure the borough becomes carbon neutral by 2037. It is a priority for the council and something we are passionate about.

“With more people beginning to make that important switch to electric vehicles, we know that more charging points are needed in Barrow. It’s great to see this happening through the Low Carbon Barrow project.”

The preparation work underway will make sure everything is in place for the installment of the charging equipment in the coming weeks and months.

The locations set to host electric vehicle charging points are:

  • Lime Street Car Park, Dalton
  • Nelson Street Car Park, Dalton
  • Park Leisure Centre
  • The Dock Museum
  • The cemetery
  • West Shore Car Park
  • Hall Street Car Park
  • Emlyn Street Car Park
  • Whittaker Street Car Park
  • Market Street Car Park

The charging points are expected to be operational later this year with work carried out by contractor AMPEV.
