Domestic matches in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League took a break this week.

Instead the final group qualifying games in the Eric McMullen Memorial Handicap TKO Trophy took place.

As a result, Workington Golf Club will take on Station Road B and Workington Veterans Club B  will be up against Workington Conservative Club in the semi-finals to take place on Wednesday, March 2.

Previous qualifying games in group A had already seen Workington Golf Club through with nine points.

But as Workington Cons faced Station Road A in the only outstanding group A fixture, the remaining semi-final spot went to the Cons Club with a 4-1 home win.

Victories for Dave Holland (+29 handicap) , Richard McCarthy (+1) and Alan Moore (+5) took the Cons to 3-0 but a win for Keith Telford (+43) gave the Station A side a slim chance of qualification in the frames won format.

In the last, a tight affair could have gone either way but in securing the proceedings on the black Ryan Barker (+21) took his team through to the semis.

Ryan Barker scored a crucial deciding frame win for Workington Conservative Club.

Station Road A finished fourth in qualifying group A and and go into the plate with third placed finishers, Vets Club A.

In group B four of the five teams all had the opportunity to qualify and even though the Rack Shack defeated Vets B 3-2, and the United Club beat Station B 3-2, the point a frame format still saw both losers progress to the semi-finals.

In the game between Station B and the United Club a victory in the first from Simon Frazer (+23) put Station B 1-0 up however as Clive Lister (+19) won the next parity was achieved.

A 43 break from Station B’s Peter O’Hagan (Scr) took care of frame three but back came the United Club as Andrew Mitchelhill (+9) put in a captain’s performance to make short work of frame four for 2-2.

In the decider Mark Suitor (+34) made the most of his handicap advantage and in winning on the colours he guided his team to victory albeit in a score-line that just fell short of qualification.

The other match in group B, and the only remaining qualifying game, started with an Andy Moore (+35) victory to put the Rack Shack 1-0 up.

However as Michael ‘Sid’ Walker (+28) and Vets B captain, and team mate, Geoff Banton (+32) won the next two, fortunes were soon reversed.

Back came the Rack Shack with a Stephen Harrison (+37) win in the next and as Peter McAvoy (+35) took the decider the Whitehaven side ended qualifying on a positive note even though they just missed out finishing third in group B.

The Rack Shack and fourth placed United Club both go on to the plate competition.
