Martin Mahone went out on a high as his Cleator Moor Celtic side hammered Campion 7-1 in their final North West Counties League.

After many years of service to the club as player, chairman and manager he had decided to make the break and will be replaced by Brian Dawson next season.

He has overseen a big finish to the season, so has been able to hand over the team in a good place.

He said: “It’s been a great effort by the players, considering we were in the relegation zone in the New Year and had seen us docked three points.

“But the way the lads have responded has been terrific and with just a bit of luck we could have finished in a play-off position.

“To round it off with a big home win in the final game was the perfect send-off.

“The room was packed afterwards and a lot of family and friends were there. I was presented with some lovely gifts and really it was a great night.”

Campion had actually scored first inside 60 seconds but once Celtic levelled through Brad Tatton they started to control the game.

Tom Mahone, Jamie Glover and Callum Birdsall gave Celtic a 4-1 interval lead.

Further goals followed from man of the match Birdsall, Kieran Maguire and top scorer Jay Wetherill.

As for the future Mahone feels the team will be in good hands with Brian Dawson who is “enthusiastic about the job.”

“As for me it will be a bit of a different direction. I think I might be up more fells than I see football matches,” he said, although son Tom will carry on the family tradition at the Celtic.
