Glamping pods plan for inn near Carlisle

Proposed glamping pods at the Crossings Inn

Plans have been submitted to Carlisle City Council for approval which would see three glamping pods built on land behind a pub to capitalise on the staycation boom.

Carlisle City Council has received an application for planning permission for the work which involves land to the rear of The Crossings Inn, Roweltown.

Outdoor Inns has submitted the application. The business has said that it “provides sustainable, affordable tourist accommodation specifically for outdoor recreation and leisure groups at, or next to, existing independently owned rural pubs across the UK”.

It said it works with pub owners, local authorities and communities to benefit from the recent growth in staycations.

Supporting statements submitted with the application say that the existing entrance to the pub car park is suitable for use by the three proposed glamping pods.

It added: “The proposed glamping pods are to be placed on the grassland area of the site with car parking spaces adjacent to the units. The hardstanding is to be retained as the carpark to service the pub.”

The site surrounding The Crossings Inn has become a popular staycation location.

A caravan and campsite is next to the site proposed for development. The pub also offers two en suite rooms and hosts weddings and corporate events.

The planning application’s design and access statement said: “The site is not located within a conservation area and there are no heritage assets affected by the proposals.”

The glamping pods would also be unaffected by flood risk zones.

It is hoped that the proposal would contribute to the community. The application added: “Outdoor Inns proposal for The Crossings Inn would represent low impact and sustainable diversification of an existing rural business.

“This integrated accommodation offer would bring social, economic and environmental benefits to the site and surrounding area through increased overnight visitors, increased spend into the local economy and a significant habitat enhancement program resulting in biodiversity net gain.”
