Carlisle and Cockermouth have moved through to the quarter finals of the Higson Cup with victories on Sunday.

At Edenside visitors Haverigg were invited to bat first and always found it difficult to get on top of the Carlisle bowlers.

In the end they had reached 123-8 from their 45 overs with each one of the six home bowlers getting among the wickets. Young Josh Stirling had the best return of 3-14.

Professional Sachin Jayawardena (35), captain and opener Drew Postlethwaite (32) and Jordan Postlethwaite (21) did the bulk of the scoring for Haverigg.

Although they lost Ben Davidson on 11, the Carlisle reply was put well on its way by a second wicket partnership of 63 between Jonathan Musgrave (41) and James Dawson (34) and they eventually reached 124-4 with almost ten overs to spare.

Matt Crowther was the most successful Haverigg bowler taking 2-32 off nine.

Rain eventually affected the other game at Sandair where Keswick’s target was revised after they were set an imposing 276-7 by Cockermouth.

In the end the figure required was 215 but when play ended they were on 191-6.

Cockermouth had lost opener Gareth White cheaply and his partner Alex Grainger was forced to retire hurt with a pulled hamstring but then a huge stand of 162 between Matthew Sempill (89) and Ryan Carruthers (85) launched the hosts to a big total.

Lower down the order the returning Greg Platten (28) and Sam Scully (24no) boosted the scoring and they didn’t really need the help of 24 extras, which included 16 wides.

It was hard work for the Keswick bowlers but Scott McGown did best, taking 3-60.

Opener Will Atkinson (60) gave his side a good start but Keswick had slipped to 101-5 by the time professional Risith Upamal and Scott McGown came together. They gave Keswick renewed hope with a stand of 70 but when Upamal was stumped by Scully off Sempill for 62 the game was brought to a premature close.

Sempill proved to be the most successful Cockermouth bowler taking 3-47.

The fourth and final first round game between Egremont and Furness takes place on Sunday.
