Wigton’s run of good results ended at Fitz Park where Keswick proved too strong as they eased to a win by 116 runs.
The Lowmoor Road side have established a solid mid-table berth in the Premier Division; had booked a semi-final place in the Higson Cup and the night before had snatched a T20 win off the last ball at Cockermouth.
But it wasn’t to be their day at Keswick where the hosts thrived after being invited to bat first and overcame a 26-2 start.
Ben Sharp (50) and pro Risith Upamal (90) put on 151 for the third wicket and that was the launchpad for a highly satisfactory 276-7 off their 50 overs.
Paul Hindmarch (29) and skipper James McGown (23) kept the momentum going as the Wigton bowlers toiled.
Wigton looked in big trouble at 11-2 but Kieran Little (43), Chris Hodgson (36) and Lewis Little (28) steadied them and although 109-4 didn’t suggest they were going to cause an upset they looked capable of getting some losing bonus points.
In the end they could only manage one single point as they were bowled-out for 160 in the 48th over.
Home skipper James McGown removed both Hodgson and Lewis Little and then did more damage to finish with 5-41 from his 10 overs as Wigton lost their last six wickets for just 26 runs.
Still lording it at the top of the table with a 100 per cent record – and in all competitions – are Carlisle.
Win number eight came at Edenside where they beat Workington by six wickets.
The west Cumbrians seemed to be in deep trouble at 20-3 but were largely rescued by skipper Matthew Lowden (50no) and professional Lahiru Dilshan (45).
They put on 56 for the fourth wicket and eventually an unbroken stand of 55 between Lowden and David Pearce (27no) saw them to 144-5 from their 50 overs.
Mike Slack was Carlisle’s most successful bowler with 2-25.
Although they had Carlisle 23-2, Workington couldn’t capitalise and Slack (67no), Ben Davidson (34) and Tom Benn (23) played their part in taking the home side to 147-4 after 42.1 overs.
Lowden took 2-22 from his ten overs to round-off a good personal game.
Cockermouth stay eight points behind the leaders after they won at Cleator by six wickets.
Cleator were 5-2 having been put in to bat but largely through the efforts of James Rogers (33), Darren Clark (22) and Kasun Madushanka (20) they got to 129 before being bowled-out after 47.2 overs.
Alex Grainger took 4-21 for Cockermouth from 8.2 overs.
Cockermouth didn’t start well and at 6-2 there was optimism in the Cleator ranks but Matthew Sempill (20) and Ryan Carruthers (30) got the visitors focused again.
Then new overseas amateur Mikyle Louis produced his best innings so far for the club with an unbeaten 60 which lifted Cockermouth to 131-4 in just 23.1 overs.
Louis is clearly a batsman who likes to put bat to ball. He only faced 40 deliveries and struck eight fours and two sixes.
At the bottom of the table Dalton scored an important win over Whitehaven by 32 runs.
Dalton, put in to bat, reached 189-8 off their 50 overs with Joe Braund-Smith leading the way on 53. There were solid contributions from Rob Jones (25), Dan Sharp (20) and Phil Humphries (20).
New professional Timycen Maruma had the best return of 3-34 from his ten overs.
But it wasn’t Maruma’s day with the bat as he was run out without facing a single ball.
As a consequence Whitehaven slumped to 12-3 but made a decent fist of it after that and earned themselves four bonus points by reaching 157 before they were bowled-out.
They were indebted to skipper Stephen Holliday (56) for getting them that far with support from Jonathan Stewart (25) and Jack McNicholas (24).
Amari Goodridge took 3-17 for Dalton from his ten overs and Lewis Bayman had 3-21 from 4.2.
Furness were comfortable home winners against Egremont after the visitors had chosen to bat first.
Apart from opener Ollie Wilford (14) and Owen Thompson (17) going in at three, no other Egremont batsman reached double figures.
Consequently they were bowled-out for 64 in 31.3 overs with Garry Thompson (3-12), Wyll Stanway (2-5) and Elliott Maxfield (2-13) sharing the bowling honours.
Both Furness openers Liam Curwen and Stanway made 22, falling to Jack Thompson (2-13), but there were no further alarms for the champions as they reached 67-2 in 10.3 overs for the points.
The derby game between Millom and Haverigg was well contested but went the way of the home side by five wickets.
Millom won the toss and invited their visitors to bat first and it was a Haverigg innings which owed much to opener Dale Graham who was eighth out for a valuable and painstaking 79 from 154 balls.
He held the Haverigg innings together and through it they were able to post 156-9.
Paul O’Callaghan was the most successful Millom bowler with 4-24 from his ten overs.
Primosh Perera, the Millom pro played an equally important knock of 70 which laid the foundations for the winning response of 159-5 after they had looked vulnerable on 20-2.
Sachin Jayawardena (2-24) and Craig Armstrong (2-28) did best with the ball for Haverigg.
