Barrow have agreed to cancel the contract of forward Luke James who has been with the Bluebirds for two seasons.
The 27-year-old James from Amble in Northumberland joined Hartlepool as a 16-year-old and went on to have three spells with the club.
In his first four years he played 90 games, scoring 19 goals. He holds the record for being the youngest player to score a League goal for the club at 17 years and 64 days.
At the start of the 2014-15 season he put in a transfer request and moved to Peterborough for an undisclosed fee.
However he struggled at Posh (32 games) and had three spells out on loan at Bradford City, Bristol Rovers and back at Hartlepool.
He got a permanent move to Forest Green in 2017 but only played 14 times before he went to Barrow on loan and scored seven times in 17 appearances.
Released by Forest Green he returned to Hartlepool for a third time and in two seasons made 64 appearances, scoring seven goals. He was also capped by England C during that time.
In 2020 he joined Barrow and in two years has clocked up 69 League and Cup appearances, scoring three goals.
The club said: “We wish Luke all the best and thank him for everything he’s done in a Barrow shirt.”
Within hours of the news breaking that James had left the Bluebirds York City announced that he had signed for the club which finished fifth in National North last season and was promoted to the National League via the play-offs.
